As part of the Ohio River Bridges Project, the Indiana Department of Transportation and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet are constructing two new crossings over the Ohio River in the Louisville, Kentucky area. The East End Crossing, roughly eight miles northeast of the city, would create a new interstate highway (I-265) by erecting a bridge over the river and connecting the Gene Snyder Freeway in Kentucky (KY 841) to the Lee Hamilton Highway in Indiana (State Road 265). In its review of the project in 2003, the Environmental Protection Agency noted that the eastern bridge would be redundant to the project’s proposed downtown bridge in accommodating projected traffic volumes. Initial construction activities on the East End Crossing began in spring, 2013.
